Paperazzi

For those with the Marathon on their mind, in the immortal words of 80’s soft rock legends Europe ‘It’s the final countdown’, your big 26mile day is almost with you, and you may find yourself humming the Martine McCutcheon classic ‘Perfect Moment’ or indeed you may already be visualising the finish and doing a Blue Peter with a mildly smug ‘and here is one we made earlier’…

At LGN we are proud of our not so subtle linking prose, but while you eat porridge like Goldilocks and the Three Bears and covertly rub Vaseline, it should also be noted that the London Marathon also provides a unique opportunity to share exactly the same experience as many faces from MTV or Heat magazine.

Because on marathon day there is no VIP room, their experience is fundamentally the same as yours, 26miles of London’s finest tarmac.

In addition, while you may be running for personal health and or for a charity close to your heart, spare a thought for the modern day celebrity, possibly coerced into unfamiliar physical pain by an unrelenting PR or managing agent. Just take a moment to consider their task, months of training in conjunction with valiant attempts to appear on iconic TV shows such as Loose Women et al, just for the possibility of being able to smile for 30 seconds while benefiting from the interview with Sally Gunnell at Tower Bridge.

Therefore the LGN top tip this month, is to externalise your own physical discomfort via acknowledging the suffering of a running celebrity nearby, because for 2009 the event is festooned with a plethora of ‘TV personalities’ hunting for Sally’s microphone.

To help you in your quest, we at LGN have listed some of those in the real race for airtime by the anticipated finishing times, so if their times match yours, do your research, look for the entourage, engage in gossip and show them a clean pair of heels.

Great hurdler and great BBC interviewer

3 hours – 3.45
You are skipping along and all of sudden the dream chance to request a Blue Peter badge and more becomes a reality.

Helen Skelton
New addition to the Blue Peter team, has WAG credentials has an anticipated time of a non too shabby 3 hours.

Nell McAndrew
This Yorkshire lady is hoping to break 3.30, but may be undone due to her much renowned weakness for blueberry muffins.

Chris Boardman
An opportunity to ‘get in the hurt box’ with one of the classic hard man of cycling and one of only a few Brits to wear the Tour de France yellow jersey. there was no one secret, sure they had some very fancy carbon bikes and kit which nabbed the headlines, but in essence it was all about meticulous attention to detail that made the overall difference. In essence it was the focus given to the hundreds of tiny things that when brought together created the success of the whole.

Chris Hoy, big thighs + aggregation of marginal gains = Gold & hot date with Queen

As Brailsford explains “Taking the one percent from everything you do. That’s what we try to do from the mechanics upwards; if a mechanic sticks a tyre on, and someone comes along and says it could be done better, it’s not an insult – it’s because we are always striving for improvement, for those one
percent gains, in absolutely every single thing we do.”

While many captains of industry have been throwing away their grand blue sky thinking of risk all to gain all strategies and instead inviting Mr. Brailsford round for dinner…… we as runners could and possibly should apply this same philosophy whatever our respective goals.

The micro as opposed to macro approach clearly crosses into learned experience that LGN would normally extol, especially at this time of year to the Spring Marathon brigade.

LGN’s aggregation of marginal gains; a runner’s translation;

LGN Maginal Gain #1
Sleep is essential for recovery process, instead of macro approach and one night trying to go to bed before you wake up… instead try routine of going to bed 15 minutes early every night and thus over each week gain almost 2 hours

LGN Marginal Gain #2
Think quality of running not quantity, often easier to keep plodding along to schedule without challenging how you feel, be brave, have days off when required and then invest renewed energy in the next session

LGN Marginal Gain #3
As weather gets milder don’t think hydration means drinking gallons of water prior to a long run, think about it days before and consider taking on extra essential electrolytes

LGN Marginal Gain #4
Marathon runners, consider using a Sunday run to mimic big day race conditions, get up at c.5am, practice eating porridge this early, practice nibbling on pre-race snacks prior to run and ensure that 26th April et al logistics do not throw you off your running rhythm

LGN Marginal Gain #5
Running shoes past their best? Calculate approximate mileage and get new shoes before the 500 mile mark or if just older than 2 years, mid sole and cushioning degrade over time and the last thing you want is a niggly injury being the motivation to open wallet

LGN Marginal Gain #6
What ‘fuel’ are you putting in your body? Carbohydrates are important, but quality of carbohydrate is equally vital, check labels and invest in high octane healthier options

LGN Marginal Gain #7
Change running route, get out of a possible running rut and aim to stimulate the mind to stimulate the body by looking at new scenery

LGN Marginal Gain #8
For those aiming for 26 miles in April, check fueling strategy, your glycogen store (petrol tank) is limited, have a race day plan to pre-empt and not react to energy needs

LGN Marginal Gain #9
Toe nails, cut them early well in advance of any race, last thing you need especially if endurance related is tender toes as feet naturally expand in race

LGN Marginal Gain #10
Make sure majority of your running is enjoyable, happy running often equates to good running, run with friends, run with music or take a train to run in a new environment, but keep it smiling to keep improving

Now that Spring is officially sprung, we at LGN wish you a new fantastic running season and hope that you can find your own additional marginal gains to ensure you get the most from every running stride.

Happy running!

Do a runner with LGN

http://www.lgnwellbeing.com/

A run is for life, not just Christmas

While the cold blanket of New Year settles and incubates lethargy for many a non runner, for some of us the recent passing of the Winter Solstice will mark two ancient and iconic lunar running phases..

1. Ye Olde London Marathon ballot place cometh good

2. The bell doth toll for New Years running resolutions

And therefore what could be a dark, drab and wholly depressing time of year, is instead rejuvenated into multi coloured kaleidoscope of running possibilities, with festive presents demonstrating Lycra love and aerobic excitement levels reaching a new crescendo.

January - a time to weigh up the correct footwear and nutrition balance

At LGN we rejoice in this time of year, hope and running have always been quite an intoxicating and heady mix and the recent LGN running seminars have proved no exception, as it is a treat to work with people clearly intent on embarking on a fresh running and fund raising challenge.

However, our biggest challenge at LGN is helping people hold onto their NY resolution fuelled and most precious running commodity – desire.

As is our human nature, the more we want something, the more we end up justifying our hasty actions with such passion fuelled logic as ‘no pain no gain’. It is all too easy running out the door with new swanky Christmas kit and leave common sense as the only gift unwrapped, (we at LGN can say this because we have made this mistake, oh yes).

We all therefore need to be reminded of how beautifully powerful running is as a form of exercise, and as such enables us get an über endorphin hit in a short time saving window, however, because it is so powerful we need to respect it and very gently nurture it.

The temptation to do too much too soon is very easily done in early January, especially if heading for London Marathon. Worst case scenarios range from physical injury often vocalised via ‘ouch!’ to mental fatigue aka – ‘I don’t want to play any more’

Run the LGN way and stay young forever..

Therefore we need to ensure our training is structured, provides gentle physical progression and that majority of running is done with a glint in the eye moistened by a desire fuelled tear.

Please find LGN’s Top 5 Winter Solstice running check list:

LGN Three C Philosophy:
Please re-read LGN’s Three C running philosophy (Consistency, Control & Confidence) or email info@lgnwellbeing.com to request a copy.

You are unique, so must be your running:

Remember running should be your Christmas gift for life and thus needs to be sustainable. LGN strongly suggest not trying to push life (work, family, social, illicit fun etc) aside, as it will eventually flood back, instead use initial weeks to find running rhythm and ensure training schedule fits with your unique life.

Flirt with your schedule:

Prior to marathon or new schedule commitment, do not rush headlong into running relationship, instead we need to tease mind & body, frustrate yourself with short provocative efforts, make sure when you get home and the key goes in the front door that you still want more.

Listen to your body:

Turn off iPod, GPS et al and listen to your body, it is the best possibly metronome, with foot stride, heart beat and breathing it is the best way to understand how to vary pace and set tempo for running success. This knowledge and physical affinity you develop early will prove vital a later running stage.

Less is more:

The desire to build up the mileage and do it early can be overwhelming. Primary physical goal, especially for new runners in initial weeks is for vital connective tissue (ligaments & tendons) to adapt to new stress, push too hard too early and long term problems can arise, in early weeks keep it short and you will keep your running sweet.

If you would like on-going LGN support for your next running journey, please take a peek at our support packages - http://www.lgnwellbeing.com/services_marathon.php

Happy running in 2009 from all the team at LGN.

www.lgnwellbeing.com

LGN 2008 Inter Advertising Agency 5km grand finale

The paparazzi go snap happy as LGN's 5km stampeed is launched from the start line

Veni, vidi, veci.
I came, I saw, I conquered. As they lined up DDB London had the distinct advantage of owning the front of the starting grid due to their previous triumph in the LGN Treadmill Challenge. And with elbows tactically held wide and with their CEO Stephen Woodford issuing team orders, DDB prepared to take on all comers and try to hang on to their 2007 5km crown.

Tale of the tape

Men's podium:

The race was won individually at a canter by DDB London's James Hayhurst in 17mins and 13 seconds, the much anticipated showdown with McCann's May 2008 winner Mark Fallows did not materialise and given how James had improved his time to quicker than Mark's victory in May, we can only hope the two industry big hitters manage to go toe to toe in 2009 for the all singing all dancing much improved LGN / NABS 5km event.

A tight tussle ensued for 2nd and 3rd places as Matt Delahunty (DDB London) just held off Nike's very own 'Just do(ing) it' Ben Jennings by a slender 4 seconds.

Men's champion James Hayhurst looks nonchalent and unaffected by his exertions...

Women's podium:
Also demonstrating big time improvements compared to May's qualifying race, DDB London's Emer Stamp triumphed on the day and dipped yet further below the magic 20min barrier and won in 19mins and 37 seconds.

Simarly to the men's scenario, Emer Stamp's McCann nemesis from May (Rosalind Lee) was not available to go head to head and instead Emer was pushed all the way by the vastly improved Emma Cranston of Manning Gottlieb OMD who also dipped below 20mins to create a new 5km pb. Backing up Emma was team mate Sarah Jenkins to snatch the third podium place.

Lactic pain = material gain..

Each* of those on a step of the podium win a biomechanical assessment at Nike Town's new gait analysis laboratories and indeed also win a beautiful pair of prescibed Nike running shoes. And indeed that was demonstrated by the majority of runners who got stuck in and finished like Cheshire Cats.. that had also got the cream.

It was this ability to encourage people to get involved that made it such a tight team tussle bewteen two agencies who both enjoy LGN running clubs and who subsequently both displayed an infectious healthy zest.

In the end DDB London did indeed hang onto their 2007 5km crown from a rampant McCann Erickson team, but not without having to scrap for every place, in a well deserved third place was Manning Gottlieb OMB who just managed to squeeze out their media rivals Mediaedge:CIA.
Victorious DDB London on an endorphin high after their LGN 5km exploits - 2009 will see EPO testing...

'We're delighted to have successfully defended our crown once again. Presidential Elections.. et al I like to think we teased you with 3 days of electric post race anticipation.

With over 400 agency men and women entered for the 2007 LGN 5km challenge and after a fantastic team race, with shoulder to shoulder competition at the sharp end and indeed hugely encouraging mass participation from beginners – the winning team has emerged. Lead out by Leo Burnett’s LGN über trainer Nicola

‘Drum roll please..’ the winning team of the inaugural 2007 LGN Inter Advertising 5km trophy was the gauntlet throwers themselves – DDB London.

Place, Team, Time
1st DDB London 2.13.25
2nd Disruption 2.26.32
3rd OMD 2.33.26
4th Euro RSCG 2.34.36
5th JWT 2.42.08
6th Lowe 2.59.31
7th Medicus 3.05.47
8th Arc 3.07.20
9th McCann 3.15.04
10th Cake 3.26.09

Individual glory

Men’s Podium

Name, Team, Time
James Hayhurst DDB 17.32
Mark Fallows McCann 17.58
Simon Pinks Disruption 18.11

Women’s Podium

Name, Team, Time
Emma Cranston OMD 20.37
Emer Stamp DDB 21.11
Liz Baines Disruption 21.58

The tale of the tape

DDB must be applauded for demonstrating commitment to the LGN running ethos of encouraging mass participation.

Their very own James Hayhurst paced his effort to perfection to win in 17min 32 seconds, slowly reeling in McCann’s brave and crowd pleasing front runner Mark Fallows.

The composition of DDB’s men’s team quartet proved to be the only team of 4 to all slip under the elusive 20 min barrier, and they were matched by a very strong women’s quartet, including Emer Stamp (and her cold symptoms..) in 2nd place behind a superb winning time of 20min 37sec set by Emma Cranston of OMD.

However, while DDB had swashbuckling team members peppering the top of the results sheet, what is equally remarkable and highly rewarding for LGN, was their passion to have so many participants of all levels. Indeed it was their ability to encourage runners of all abilities to don the DDB colours that enabled their margin of victory to be so dominant.

DDB’s team of 8 did indeed secure the initially victory with slender margin of 1minute and 52 seconds over a determined Disruption (TBWA / Tequila) team, however, once the bonus times were awarded to all teams for their additional ‘non 8’ team members, their margin of victory over Disruption grew to a hugely impressive 13 minutes and 7 seconds.

Victorious team DDB London with their long standing LGN trainer Shavaun

In summary DDB elegantly demonstrated championship credentials in terms of both agency participation and pure running fitness.

Chief Exec bragging rights

The race within a race, kept many a spectator on tenterhooks, especially with the last minute entry and number swap of Disruption’s very own Chief Exec Tim Lindsay.

When the dust had settled, it became clear that the Paddington Basin regeneration has also extended to ‘special’ piped tap water, as DDB yet again stood proud as Stephen Woodford romped home in a gazelle-like 23min and 8 seconds, a very close run second place was Disruption’s Tim Bonnet in 24mins 26 seconds, with the final step on the podium going to the aforementioned Tim Lindsay in a very respectable 26min 4 seconds, while just outside the medals while wearing both iPod and an air of aerobic nonchalance was Euro RSCG’s Mark Cadman with a comfortable sub 30min clocking of 27min 6 seconds.

DDB London’s proud CEO Stephen Woodford and team claim the LGN 2007 5km spoils and all important industry bragging rights.

Special mentions

LGN will be awarding this week special Runners Need goodie bags to those runners that have been recognised by the LGN trainers as going the extra mile (not literally).

But prior to the goodie bags, I would like to salute Adelle Noor, Zara Amin and Laverne Joshua from JWT for completing the 5km with LGN trainer Sam after almost no running experience before. I would also like to mention the chap who ran very respectably in what look liked white moon boots / 1930’s basketball boots, the lady who mistook the finishing line 10 metres too early and went to calmly sit down only to rushed back on her feet by an LGN trainer to finish with a smile and of course the entire agency who had their Christmas party the night before the race (you know who you are), big LGN respect.

And also to Cake and OMD for getting involved in the 5km event at the last minute and adding a much need dash of bespoke PR and mass participation high frequency media delivery – we hope to see you back in 2008 for a bigger and even greater LGN two stepping fun-fest.

The very best of health and happy running to one and all.

Ben Pochee

Do a runner with LGN

http://www.lgnwellbeing.com/
